Sometimes I just feel that my everyday life isn't that exciting to others. I have been working on several projects, including a few Jo Morton quilts. I am looking forward to attending a workshop taught by Jo on July 28th at Prairie Point Quilt Shop in Shawnee, Kansas.

I have also been working on t-shirt quilts for my customers. My business started in September 2009 and all of my earnings are placed in an account towards the purchase of a longarm quilting machine! It will be awhile but am looking forward to finally being able to quilt my large quilts. I don't quilt anything larger than a 50" x 50" on my Bernina. Just too much to deal with under the small machine. I guess the upside is that I get a good workout!

My husband and I are spending four nights and five days at my in-laws. We only live 45 miles away but never get to spend a lot of quality time with them. This was my idea. Now what daughter-in-law would suggest a vacation at the in-laws?!?!

As I write this, it is the anniversary of the birth of our wonderful country. I hope all of you take the time to reflect on what this country stands for and pray that we get back to the ideals that our founding fathers lived by. Enjoy the day and celebrate this Nation.

Happy 4th of July,

Mindy5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-15606707474020888282009-11-11T09:40:00.002-06:002009-11-11T09:46:18.775-06:00Veteran's DayThank you to the many men and women who are fighting to keep this Country free. My father was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy. He flew in PBY's along the California coast hunting for Japanese submarines. My husband's great uncle was an airman in WWII who lost his life in England aboard the Paper Doll. And his cousin fought in Vietnam and became MIA. They never found his body. He is on the Wall. Wherever you are today, whatever you are doing, stop and give thanks for all that have gone before us to keep this Country free and for all that are currently serving in the Military. And, keep those families in prayer who lost loved ones in the terrorist attack at Ft. Hood.5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-87333466884809246522009-11-10T22:29:00.005-06:002009-11-11T23:25:38.516-06:00Alex AndersonYesterday I attended an event sponsored by our local Bernina dealer that featured Alex Anderson. It was held at the Marriott Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas. The morning started with a continental breakfast and shopping. What's not to love there?!?! The Bernina dealer had several machines set up for trial runs. Plus, they had someone demonstrating the new AccuCut Go. Pretty sweet.

After opening remarks, Alex took the stage. She spoke about her early years, learning how to quilt, "Simply Quilts" and "The Quilt Show." She also presented a trunk show. We took a break and then she continued her lecture. The morning ended with a question and answer period and then a book signing. What a delightful person! Her lecture was entertaining, funny, informative and lively. If you get a chance to experience an Alex Anderson lecture and/or trunk show, go for it. You will not be disappointed.
5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-48466680978773052822009-11-03T16:10:00.002-06:002009-11-03T16:19:48.270-06:00World's Biggest Hexagon ChallengeI want to tell you about a great opportunity to participate in a challenge as well as contribute to charity. I had surgery on September 18th and I am still not 100%. I regularly take a blood thinner and the doctor told me (after the surgery of course) that my recovery will take longer than usual. Good thing he told me after the fact. I might have changed my mind. Not really, I was having yucky symptoms and had to go through the surgery. So, what have I been doing during the past 5 weeks? A little hand work and some machine work when I am up to it but also watching a lot of t.v. If any of you have had gall bladder surgery, share with me what your experiences were with your recovery.

I did have to teach a class on October 3rd at Prairie Point Quilt Shop in Shawnee, Kansas and fortunately, I was able to take it easy. My new class is Introduction to English Paper Piecing. I will have it on the schedule again for spring so if you are in the area, sign up and I will teach you how to make those little hexagon flowers. Watch out, it's very addicting!

I've been somewhat sidetracked on my patterns but I promise I will have some new additions by the end of the year. I have also partnered with Pat Komer of Willowrock to make t-shirt quilts on commission. Check out her website, http://www.willowrockquilting.com/. She quilted my Appli-Cake quilt. She is an awesome longarm quilter and will accept quilts from all over the U.S.

I promise to post regularly so please come back to see what is new and exciting for 5acre Designs!

Until next time,

Happy Quilting5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-27057274135051974472009-07-28T15:10:00.005-05:002009-07-28T15:28:10.859-05:00First Magazine Publication!I know, I know, it's been a long time since I updated my Blog but now I must tell all of you my exciting news. My tablerunner from my "Appli-Cake" pattern has been featured in the August/September issue of Quilter's Home. It is a two page article on pages 34 and 35 about tablerunners and contains several photos of different tablerunners created by such names as Late Bloomers and Out On A Limb. The runner is done in Moda's Fabulous Fall by designer Deb Strain. I have several kits prepared with this fabric as well as other fabrics. The kits are available for $18.00 (plus tax if you live in the State of Kansas). Contact me if you would like to purchase a kit. The kits include the pattern and all the fabrics for the top as well as the backing and binding.

I am hoping to have some new patterns available soon. My quilt, "Fleurs Pastelles" has been featured in Kathy Delaney's new book, "Pots de Fleurs." I also have a punchneedle featured in the book. Kathy's quilt was done with a dark background and I decided to do mine in pastels. The fabric in my quilt is all by Robyn Pandolph when she designed for Moda. The quilt is currently on display at Prairie Point Quilt Shop in Shawnee, Kansas.

I used Kathy's patterns but changed a couple of the blocks, using dimensional techniques such as yo-yos for the centers of the flowers, folded buds, etc. It was a lot of fun making this quilt and I thank Kathy for the opportunity to appear in her book.

You can find the book, "Pots de Fleurs" at Kathy's website by clicking on this link - http://kathydelaney.com/store/page2.html.

5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-2070204945182015312008-11-28T22:06:00.002-06:002008-11-28T22:20:42.356-06:00New Shops, Quilt Show and Other MusingsI recently was a vendor at the Blue Valley Quilt Guild Show in Lenexa, Kansas and shared a booth with a good friend, Susan Martin of Calico Quilt Designs. We had a terrific time both days and met a lot of great people. We even had our first snow flurries of the season!

Quilter's Paradise located in Baldwin City, Kansas was also a vendor at the show and has picked up "Cody's Flower Garden" to sell in their shop. Quilter's Paradise is a brick and mortar shop as well as an online store. They sell fabric, patterns, kits, notions and also have a longarm quilting business in their shop. If you are in the area, stop by and say "hi" to owner Sharon Vesecky. A link to their website is located in the left column.

L'il Red Hen Quilt Shop & More located in Paola, Kansas is the latest to retail my "Appli-Cake" pattern. Owner, Janna Renner, currently has "Appli-Cake" on display and has cut several kits in the tablerunner size for a quick Christmas gift. The kits are available in traditional Christmas reds and greens or beautiful blues, whites and grays. Samples of both tablerunners are also on display. The shop also houses gifts as well as your traditional quilting items.

Look for a new pattern soon to be introduced on the website. I am busy quilting it and will have the pattern written and the photo up as soon as possible.

Have a terrific Holiday season and happy quilting......Mindy Peterson5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-217217463847118412008-10-29T10:46:00.004-05:002008-10-30T09:21:01.022-05:00Travels and UpdatesIt's been awhile since I've posted and thought I had better update everyone on my latest adventures.

The Country Store in Carthage, Missouri is owned by Terri Garner and is a wonderful and friendly shop! They carry a large assortment of fabric and have a great discount section. They now carry both of my patterns, "Cody's Flower Garden" and "Appli-Cake" and are located at 14426 Burr Oak Road, Carthage, Missouri. Their phone number is (417) 358-9385. At this time, they do not have a website.

Heritage Fine Fabrics in Belton, Missouri is the latest shop to purchase "Appli-Cake" and will be carrying kits for table runners. Connie Read is the owner and is a great gal. She carries a wide variety of fabrics including Kansas Troubles, Fairy Frost by Michael Miller, Fossil Ferns and other delicious fabrics. Heritage also has a huge assortment of Moda Charm Squares and Layer Cakes. A link to her website is located in the left column.

I recently travelled to the Dallas, Texas area and was able to visit Moda Fabrics. All I can say is that it was very overwhelming and sort of like a fabric Disneyland! I did manage to come away with a lot of goodies which will be used in my future patterns.

I am currently working on ideas for some smaller quilt patterns. I know all of us love to be able to complete a quilt quickly and smaller pattern sizes allow us to accomplish that without it taking a year or more. That way those projects won't end up as UFO's in your quilt room!

I will be vending at the Blue Valley Quilt Guild Show on Friday, November 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The show is located at the Community Covenant Church at 15700 West 87th Street Parkway in Lenexa, Kansas. It's a great show and, if you are in the area, I hope you will have a chance to stop by and say "hey."

Enjoy the fall weather and check back often for updates.

Until later...Happy Stitchin' Mindy Peterson5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-33750578991549488252008-09-09T11:14:00.007-05:002008-09-09T12:27:22.561-05:00New Friends and a New PatternMy newest pattern is "Appli-Cake" which uses Moda's new 10" Layer Cakes (or you can cut your own 10" squares). There is a touch of simple applique ~ hearts and circles ~ which can be applied using the needleturn, fusible or machine method. I also added a blanket stitch around the hearts and circles. Of course, that is your option. If you've been looking for something to do with those Layer Cakes you purchased at your local quilt shop, this is the pattern for you. A picture of the quilt is on the left of this page under "Available Patterns."

Prairie Point Quilt Shop in Shawnee, Kansas has purchased both of my new patterns for retail sale. Prairie Point is a great shop with a terrific staff. They offer a large variety of classes and are fortunate to have Terry Clothier Thompson and Barbara Brackman lecture at the shop on a quarterly basis. Kathy Delaney, another National Teacher is an employee and quilt instructor. Prairie Point was also chosen by the staff of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine as a Top 10 Shop and was included in an issue of Quilt Sampler magazine. A link to their website is also on the left of this page.

Needle Nest Quilt Fabric & Yarn Shoppe in Louisburg, Kansas has also purchased both patterns. Their shop is adorable! It is located in a cute yellow victorian house and features, not only quilting goodies, but also yarn and knitting classes. Make sure you stop by and say "hi" to Donna, Jeanette and Rhonda and also give a pat on the head to Charlie, their resident Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. A link to their website is on the left of this page.

Tranquility Quilts & Fabric Shop, an online store in Buena Park, California, has purchased both of my patterns and has them up on their website for sale. Owner, Lee Ann, is very involved in charity quilting and 5% of every purchase is donated to Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance. Make sure you visit their website and bookmark it in your favorites. A link to their website is on the left of this page.

Serendipity Quilt Shop is located in Dagsboro, Delaware and is celebrating their grand opening September 11-13, 2008. If you are in the area, stop by and say "hi" to Kathy and the gang. Their shop also carries both of my patterns. A link to their website is on the left of this page.

Quilter's Station in Lee's Summit, Missouri is the newest shop to purchase my patterns for retail sale. They are carrying "Cody's Flower Garden" and owner Rita knows that it is just the right pattern for her customers who like a little hand work. Quilter's Station offers Primitives of the Midwest, a 6 day event featuring some of quilting's best teachers. Make sure you mark your calendars for June 22-27, 2009. Quilters from all over the country attend this event and classes fill up quickly. Quilter's Station was also chosen by the staff of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine as a Top 10 Shop and was included in the 2006 Spring/Summer issue of Quilt Sampler magazine. A link to their website is also on the left of this page.

Thank you to all of the shops who have purchased my patterns for retail sale. My patterns are now available in 8 states and 11 shops. My goal is all 50 states and, of course, many more shops!

I am currently working on my newest patterns ~ a series of floral applique designs. Check back often for news of my patterns and locations for purchase. My quilt, "Midnight Garden Memories," became the inspiration for my interest in pattern design. Terry gave me a photo of an antique quilt (the quilt on page 8) and told me to design a new version, using any fabric or colors and make it any size. I decided to take some of the elements from the original quilt and completely re-design the border. I also decided to use a black background, a Lakehouse dot, to set off the Michael Miller Fairy Frost bright green, pink and yellow. You can see the finished quilt on page 10 in the book. A photo is below, as well.

I would like to thank Laura Van Divier of Over The Rainbow for purchasing my pattern "Cody's Flower Garden" for her online quilt store. I have added a link to her store in my Favorite Links at the bottom of my Blog. Check out her store and sign up for her Newsletter. Her Newsletters are always full of Farm and Family news and I look forward to reading about the latest exploits of the chickens, ducks, alpacas, dogs, her daughters, her husband and her mom and dad.

Thanks a ton also to Bolts in the Bathtub, a quilt store in Lancaster, California for purchasing "Cody's Flower Garden" for their shop. Bolts is a shop that I worked in prior to moving to Kansas. The gals who own the shop are a lot of fun and I appreciate their support of my new business. Stop in and say "hi" if you are in their area. A link to their website is on the left of the page.

Besides designing patterns, I also teach various quilting classes at Prairie Point Quilt Shop in Shawnee, Kansas and Needle Nest Quilt Shop in Louisburg, Kansas. If you live in the Kansas City area, make sure you check out both of these wonderful quilt shops. They have a wide variety of fabrics, patterns and books. If you get a chance to take one of my classes, make sure you tell me that you found out about it on my Blog. At Needle Nest, we are attempting to create a once a month Applique Club where those of us interested in that type of quilting can meet and share our knowledge.

Until next time...happy quilting! Mindy
5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1806895131565657029.post-28505692041857223542008-08-10T09:52:00.009-05:002008-09-09T12:18:46.717-05:00Welcome to my New Pattern Company

Welcome to my new Blog! I hope you will come back and visit as I will update often with news and my new patterns as they become available.

My new pattern design company is in full swing with my first pattern, “Cody’s Flower Garden" (as seen in the above photo), on the market. My best friend, Michelle Cole, designed and made this quilt for me as a going away gift for my move from California to Kansas. When I received the quilt, I immediately suggested that I write the pattern for the quilt and that we market it to the public. She agreed and “Cody’s Flower Garden” was born. I named it after my Labrador Retriever that I lost in 2007. She had been my faithful and loving companion since October 1992 and I thought it would be a wonderful tribute to her.

I recently travelled to Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota for a family reunion and vacation and decided to bring along several patterns. Thanks go out to Emily’s Country Cottage in Bemidji, Minnesota; Quilt S’more in Roseau, Minnesota; the Bent Pin in Williston, North Dakota; and The Quilt Shop in Custer, South Dakota for purchasing my first pattern! There’s nothing quite like seeing your very first pattern hanging on a display rack. Links for Emily's Country Cottage and The Bent Pin are on the left of the page.

I am currently finishing up my second pattern. The quilt is completed and the pattern is almost done. I just have a few finishing touches and it will be ready for market. It features Moda’s new Layer Cakes with a touch of appliqué. Look for “Appli-Cake” to be released soon.

Until next time...happy quilting! Mindy
5acre Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923846100431056837noreply@blogger.com3
